Port Authority To Move Forward With Tunnel Plan
WNYC, October 18, 2007
By Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY October 18, 2007 --Today, the Port Authority looks at a major program it abandoned 2 years ago -- a multi-billion dollar freight rail tunnel under New York harbor. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.
It's not often that cities and states turn their backs on large grants from the federal government, but that's what the Port Authority did in 2005. Congressman Jerrold Nadler at the time secured $100 million to study and plan for a tunnel that would allow trains to transport freight from New Jersey to Brooklyn.
Supporters said the tunnel would remove thousands of trucks from city streets and Hudson River crossings, but opponents said it would only shift traffic to other parts of the metropolitan area. And the city and state said a project of that size would be a distraction from other large-scale undertakings such as the 2nd Avenue subway.
At today's meeting, Port Authority commissioners will reconsider taking the money -- at least enough of it to conduct an in-depth study to decide whether to progress further. For WNYC, I'm Fred Mogul.
